Retro football shirts: design reference versus vintage garment
Distinguish a retro-style design from an original period garment and compare the exact season, details and condition being offered.
Separate design era from garment age
A shirt described with a historic season may reproduce the design of that era. That label does not establish that the garment itself was manufactured then. Ask whether the item is a retro-style reference or an original period garment before making a collector’s purchase.
Compare the specific season and design
Record the club, season, home or away design and pictured sponsor placement. Similar club colours can recur across several seasons. Use front and back photographs and the individual product link to identify the exact reference rather than relying only on a famous player’s name.
Ask about the item being supplied
Request current photos and measured size. For any item presented as used or original vintage, ask for condition details and evidence supporting that description. Do not infer age, provenance or official authenticity from a catalogue image alone.
Keep personalisation distinct
An added player name or custom number is a separate specification from the base shirt design. Write the intended text exactly and ask about the proposed lettering and placement. Request a quote for the identified reference, size and decoration before deciding.
Build a design record before choosing the print
A famous player’s name may be associated with more than one shirt. Start with the base design, then review the lettering and number as a separate part of the specification.

| Detail | Record from the selected reference | Follow-up question |
|---|---|---|
| Design era | Team and season label as listed | Is the item described as a retro-style garment or an original period piece? |
| Front | Collar, sponsor position, panels and sleeve trim | Do the current product photos match the intended design? |
| Back | Blank or printed, name and number placement | Which lettering and layout are being offered? |
| Garment | Current measurements and condition description | Is this the actual item or a catalogue example? |
A reference sheet for a retro-shirt enquiry
Use a screenshot or saved image to identify a detail, and keep the product link beside it. This example is a specification format, not a claim that a particular historical version or lettering set is available.
Team and catalogue season: __ Product URL and reference: __ Design details to match: collar __; sponsor __; sleeves __ Supplied item described as: __ Requested back: plain / name __ / number __ Please show the proposed lettering and current garment measurements.
If the aim is to recreate a particular season’s look, check the lettering proposal before approving it. For a collector’s purchase, keep any provenance and condition evidence separate from the catalogue’s design label; they answer different questions.

Common questions
Does a 1990s season title mean the garment dates from the 1990s?
No. It can describe the design reference. Ask explicitly about the age and nature of the item being supplied.
Can photographs alone establish vintage authenticity?
No. Request appropriate provenance or other evidence for any originality claim.
More questions about your selection
Does adding a famous player’s name make the shirt a historical match version?
No. Added decoration is a separate specification. Confirm the underlying design and the lettering being offered without treating the name as proof of match use.
What photos are useful when comparing two retro-style references?
Keep front, back, collar and sleeve-detail photos together. They help distinguish similar designs before you compare size or requested printing.
